In the end of June we had an exploratory surgery on Makayla's left ear. We did the same surgery 2 years ago on her right ear and the hearing actually improved on that side. We are still hoping for similar results but it took lots of time. As of now it has not had the impact we hoped for but the surgery went well.
This was before the surgery, her surgery time was postponed because an emergency surgery came in. She got to color on her hospital doll and do all the pre-op checks on her. She had so much fun. I felt so bad for her, she did not eat for almost 24 hours and was a little bit grumpy before going into surgery. But all in all she handled it like a champ. When they got into her middle ear they found lots of scar tissue. They removed it and as one of the ear bones was completely covered in scar tissue it took a little manipulation to get it moving again. We are grateful, however, that they did not have to do major repairs on the ear bone as that would have required an incision behind her ear. Her ENT is watching her closely for improvements to her hearing. His main worry is that the scar tissue has grown back. I really hope not :) She is wearing her hearing aids and is doing wonderful things in school. She may not be at grade level in all her skills yet but she is making so much progress that we will be transferring her back to our neighborhood school Falcon Ridge next school year. She is excited to go to school with her neighborhood friends again .
